no DNF's here ... eh - Sauce?
this is what I hope for the rest of our races... a PR for both of us. how happy would we be?
Monday - Columbus Day and we are running the 33rd annual Tufts 10k for the first time...
It was a bloody chilly start and for such a short race it took up most of the day... 9.30am shopping stop for coconut water and pro bars... yup - the bar that keeps on giving;)
then Simon's for Sauce to get her double cubano and my quad espresso - we could talk coffee for hours; both of us are arguably purists when it comes to the brown stuff.
were I racing with anyone other than Sauce then I would have insisted on using the 'T' (MBTA) but she knows how to park in town!
so smooth.. packet/number pick up ... back to the car to drop extra layers... warm and sunny , actually perfect racing conditions ... back to the start... and we warmed up... this, I think ,was the most important thing we did all day... neither of us are 'spring chickens' although I am almost 8 years older than Sauce so she would rattle her snarky self at this ... >chortle chortle<
we hung together as long as poss - I moved up to my pace group with 5 mins to go and got all caught up with 2 cancer survivors and a mate who were so happy to be there they were crying with joy... the national anthem started and they were sobbing... I joined in with the bawling - infectious !... so snivelled through most of my first mile!!! what a race for emotions and just feeling so happy to be a powerful woman...
the route doubled back on itself so it was easy to see the elite women running - unbelievable stuff:
1st place time was 32:07... that would be a 5:10 per mile average. A 25 year old.
2nd place time was 32:12... that would be a 5:11 per mile average. A 28 year old
1078th - Sauce's PR time was 53:33....that would be a 8:37 per mile average. A 39 year old (not for much longer ...chortle loudly). over all group place was 336/1835 ROCK ON !
182nd - my PR time was 44.37....that would be a 7:11 per mile average. A 47 year old (not for much longer .OMG ancient!). over all group place was 29/1439 ... not too shabby......
we met up after the race and Sauce was in a terrible funk! all bitter and twisted :( she is not happy with her new GPS watch - Garmin 405 - but hey this was her first race with it AND its a bugger to get to grips with these things .
My opinion ( had Garmin 405 for 2 years + previous 15 or so with a polar) the perfect watch is not available yet and Garmin are best on the market just now .
I wanted the new 310 multi-sport Garmin for triathlon BUT there are just too many design faults for me just now .... plus I'm thrilled just to struggle through the swim NOT even close to being able to pace myself while thrashing around like a lunatic!
we grabbed our waters, bananas, luna bars, and I chugged some chocolate milk ... its not happening for us yet... hang on BEER! walking to the closest bar the realisation of our achievements sets in ... we are delirious with joy by the time our bums are on bar stools and a couple of UFO's are sliding down a treat...
we did something special today... personally and for WOMEN.
